It’s an effortless car to maneuver and park on taut city streets, yet it still cruises confidently and cozily on the open highway. Its suspension is pliant but not harsh. One of its best attributes, however, lives under the spandex hood – the Golf’s 170-horsepower, turbocharged engine. While most compact cars are sluggish getting up to speed, the Golf has no trouble moving quickly from a stop or on a highway on-ramp. It’s not all good news however – the Golf earns a lower predicted reliability compared to many rivals.

Should I Buy the Volkswagen Golf?

Another fine option is the Honda Civic hatchback, which is all-new for 2017. The Civic can’t match the Golf’s cargo space, but it earns up to thirty one mpg in the city and forty mpg on the highway. The Golf comebacks a decent 25/36 mpg city/highway. The Civic also offers a slightly more substantial suite of active safety features at around the same price point as the Golf (about $21,500 for each). These additions include adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, when optioned with Honda Sensing.

Looking for high spectacle? The 292-horsepower Golf R is surely up to the task. It packs an all-wheel-drive system, along with almost every tech feature you can think of – adjustable shocks, parking sensors, and a Fender sound system. But its spectacle comes with a steep $39,375 price tag. You can buy its 210-horsepower Golf GTI sibling for almost $14,000 less. The 305-horsepower Subaru WRX STI ($35,195) and 350-horsepower Ford Concentrate RS ($36,120) are both less expensive as well.

All in all, the two thousand seventeen Golf may not be the top pick in its class, but it is still a good one.

Most compact cars – including sedans and hatchbacks – don’t come close to that amount of storage space. Only a few can surpass it. Golf Gas Mileage: Good, Not Superb

The two thousand seventeen VW Golf earns average fuel economy for the compact car class.
