The Durant Daily Democrat, Police investigate carjacking

The Durant Police Department is investigating a carjacking that occurred at three hundred twelve Westside Drive in the Braum`s parking lot.

Officers were dispatched at one thousand fifteen p.m. Saturday about an armed carjacking. According to police, The victim was sitting in the passenger seat of his locked vehicle while his wifey was inwards the store shopping. A presently unidentified suspect walked up to the victim`s window, pointed a handgun and demanded the victim unlock the vehicle`s door. The victim did as demanded and the suspect got into the driver`s seat. The victim was able to exit the vehicle before the suspect was able to drive off.

Within a very brief time, patrol officers were able to locate the stolen vehicle at 21st and Main, and a pursuit of the vehicle began. The pursuit went northbound on Highway Sixty nine/75 and exited onto North Very first Avenue. The suspect ran off the roadway and struck a Durant Police vehicle head on, but was able to get back onto the roadway. The pursuit continued back onto southbound Highway Sixty nine/75, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol joined the pursue. The pursuit exited onto westbound West Main Street. Due to harm of the front left tire, the vehicle stopped in the two thousand three hundred block of West Main Street, where the suspect was able to escape on foot. The handgun was recovered and found to be an “air-soft” pistol.

The suspect is described as a black masculine wearing blue jeans, a light-blue T-shirt with a light-blue cloth around his head like a bandana and appeared to have an “Afro” type hair style. The Durant Police Department is asking for assistance from anyone who can identify the suspect or anyone who witnessed the suspect around the time of the crime. Anyone who has information is urged to contact the Durant Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.

In other news, a drowning occurred at approximately nine a.m. Monday on Lake Texoma on the north side of Wood Island, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Recovery of the victim, 69-year-old Bob Garcia of Wichita Falls, Texas, was made approximately sixty feet north of the north shore of Wood Island in about six feet of water using dragging equipment and side-scan sonar.

According to OHP, Garcia was anchored in a one thousand nine hundred ninety six SeaRay vessel with engine off on the north side of Wood Island. The vessel`s anchor came liberate and the victim entered into the water near the back of the boat to check the problem. He went under the water and did not re-surface.

Trooper Danny Chaffin of the Lake Texoma detachment of the Marine Enforcement Division investigated the drowning.

In other accidents, OHP investigated an ATV accident late Sunday afternoon at Chapparral Lane two miles east of Wade. Two ladies from Bennington were injured when the ATV spinned after the driver lost control on a curve, according to OHP. A 14-year-old, who was the driver, was flown to Children`s Hospital in Dallas where she was listed in stable condition with gam injuries.

A 13-year-old was taken by private vehicle to AllianceHealth in Durant where she was treated and released.

Another passenger, a 14-year-old chick, was not injured.

Trooper`s arrived on scene and utilized two tourniquets to stabilize the driver until EMS arrived, according to OHP. Names of the victims were not released.
