A go after up to a story we brought you Thursday night only on FOX10 News about a spike in car thefts. The thieves are specifically targeting older model Hondas, evidently using a blank key.
Since our story, some of our viewers have told us about more cars that have been stolen from busy parking lots just this week.
We asked Mobile Police on Thursday for car theft numbers for the month, and we were told Friday that those numbers aren’t available yet. But our viewers have let us know about more Hondas being stolen. One of them was right out of a man’s front yard.
David Gollotte’s one thousand nine hundred ninety seven Honda Accord usually sits in front of his house in Theodore. But when he woke up on Wednesday.
"Oh I said my goodness excellent day in the morning my heavenly days Molly I can’t believe it my cars gone, I can’t believe it my old raggedy car."
Remarkably. it was gone.
"I mean why would they want me 97, I have my pickup, my cars, and everything and the keys are in it too, right here in the yard but they took my ninety seven Accord."
Friday afternoon, a police car sat in front of his home while the officer packed out the stolen car report. Gollotte evidently isn’t the only victim. On Thursday, we spoke with a woman who’s one thousand nine hundred ninety three Honda Accord was taken from the Providence Hospital parking lot. She says investigators found her car the next day, stripped. Police have made an arrest in that theft. Another woman wrote on our Facebook page that the same thing happened to her at the hospital this week.
MPD has confirmed that thieves are targeting 90’s model Hondas in the area. So what can you do to protect yours?
Terry Lee installs security systems at Ken’s Car-Tunes, especially in cars older than 1998. He says getting an alarm system that acts as a kill switch could stop thieves from getting away.
"Cause once they break in the alarm is going to be energized so at that point they could not crank the car."
Or, for a cheaper option, you can buy a steering wheel lock, which makes the car very hard to steer of thieves get in.
We’re told the thieves are using a blank key, so it’s hard to point them out. But Gollotte says no matter how they’re doing it, why they want these hammer up cars, doesn’t make sense to him.
"Hey, it is what it is. it’s an eye sore, ya know I don’t know why anybody would want it. it’s unbelievable."
Police have not found Gollotte’s car. We will keep you updated on any more thefts or arrests.
