MADISON, Wis. – A Madison man says he heard a car alarm and yelling from inwards his west side condo and was moved to act Thursday morning.
Police are crediting that activity with catching a 16-year-old who they believe was cracking into a car in an area where twenty two similar cases have been reported in June.
Mike, who asked that News three not use his last name, said he heard the noises around Four:00 a.m. Thursday, put on his clothes, grabbed his handgun and went outside. He walked onto Dorchester Way, just off McKee Road, to see what was happening.
"I ended up witnessing my neighbor having a gentleman in a bear hug in the middle of PD or McKee Road, about a half a block down," Mike said. "I quickly moved to their location and had my gun out at that point. He was in his underwear only with a youthfull kid in a bear hug."
While his neighbor ran home to get clothes on, Mike says he stayed with the teenage in the median, holding the gun he’s been training with since January.
"I didn’t feel awkward about it," Mike said. "I didn’t menace the gentleman with it. I just had it out and he eyed it and was worried when he witnessed it and was quickly on the ground. I think it served its purpose, having it out."
Police say they were called at Four:Nineteen a.m. to the three thousand one hundred block of Dorchester Way on a report of someone violating into cars. Those calls have been frequent, with twenty two reports of theft from auto in this neighborhood in June alone.
"Certainly, we don’t want people to put themselves at risk, but in this case we have two neighbors who believed they could take control of the situation and they did," said Madison Police Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain. "Because of that, we have someone in custody, and these are hard crimes to solve. They happen quickly and these people are in and out of these cars, take a few items and run."
Mike says those thefts were on his mind when he left the house Thursday morning.
"I think he just picked on the wrong neighborhood," Mike said.
The teenage said he was from Chicago, but police said they could not verify that information. He told police he just happened to be walking in the neighborhood and denied committing any crimes. He was arrested on suspicion of entry into a locked vehicle and on a curfew disturbance.
